A New Decade Dawns

Hello again colleagues and may I wish you all a satisfying year in this, the second decade of the 21st century. Many of you may recall how 10 years ago, there was great concern regarding the status of our computer systems as the clock switched from December 31st, 1999 to January 1st, 2000. Thousands of people around the world waited and watched the new century arrive after months of preparation, testing and planning for all the “what ifs”!!!!

System capacity and trust in those systems have increased exponentially since then. We are pleased to report that some 66% of Manitoba’s nurses registered online for the 2010 registration year; this is an increase over last year and we are encouraged by that as it is a secure, easy way to ensure your registration occurs correctly and on time.

Literally hundreds of you responded to a survey relating to online registration; we were overwhelmed by the response….thank you!!!!!!!!! We also surveyed many of you who completed paper registration forms to seek to learn what would prompt you to switch to an electronic method. We are listening to your concerns regarding passwords, access and security.

It is our goal to move to a totally online process. We are accepting the challenge to assure you, our members that online registration is as secure as online banking, online bill payment or any other financial and information sensitive transactions you might undertake online. This blog will contain more information regarding security levels and system improvements at the College to increase our service level to you.

Other provinces are also moving towards increasing online registration with BC this year moving to 100% online. We would hope to be completely online by the 2012 registration year.

I would welcome your thoughts on this matter; let’s start a conversation!!!!! Your comments will be welcomed and support us responding to your needs as registered nurses in the province of Manitoba.

    Hi Helga,
Happy New Year to you as well. I am an avid supporter of the ability to re-register securely, and online. I believe that this is a fiscally responsible as well as environmentally friendly way to maintain my registration. With secure access to payment, and encryption, I also believe that anyone who has ever made a purchase on “E-Bay”, would feel equally as confident to renew their registration here!
All the Best to the CRNM throughout the year in promoting this initiative.

Sonia, thank you for your response. We are able to absolutely assure Manitoba nurses that the on-line registration renewal process and payment thereof are secure with encryption similar or exceeding that of on-line banking.
Support from nurses such as yourself is so appreciated.

I use the on-line registration, and appreciate it’s convenience, but we have to remember that there are rural areas that do not have access to high-speed internet. Can dial-up can handle the registration process?

It only took memory of one instance of having to drive at night to the drop box outside the College (then MONA!) offices to convince me that on-line registration is the way to go. I love it and with the instant reply that it has been electronically recieved am always relieved that I have the priviledge to work for another year. Thanks for connecting more closely with us. This blog is a great way to engage us and give us an opportunity to see how our registration dollars are impacting nursing as a whole. Thanks Helga and Kathy!

I had trouble the first year the college offered on-line registration but with the help of the college staff we figured out how to do it and it has been a slice ever since. I would never want to go back to the paper copy. I live in rural Manitoba and love the ability to register on-line. I love to save all the beautiful trees we have up here. Thanks. Karen

Karen, the staff at the College are very skilled at supporting members through the on-line registration process. This can be done by phone and in fact we also have 2 computer stations in a consultation room at the College and are more than happy to support nurses who walk in. Staff sit with them and support them through the on-line registration process.

      Thanks for your comments.

Firstly, I think this blog is a fabulous idea.

As for completely online registration – I interpret that to mean ONLY online registration, no opting out – while I have no objection I am sure that some members will. At first I thought we should always allow choice but then remembered that there is something in the entry-level competencies about technological abilities so maybe you can defend a challenge by a member.

    All the best.

Doris, I also recall dropping off my registration in the MARN mailbox; we continue to have numerous registrations delivered in that fashion and as registration draws nigh, regular checks of the mailbox becomes part of our daily routine. On-line registration is certainly rapid and you are correct, the reply to the registrant that it has been received adds assurance.

    Thanks for commenting.
